What do you like about your role?Variety! I have a role which is both external and internal client facing. My external clients are extensive and across the globe. My internal clients are all divisions of the business. I started my legal exposure as a secretary at Allen & Overy, then moved to Pinsent Masons and then moved to Exigent here in South Africa. Part of our service suite is document production - it is becoming a more specialised service even with the adoption of technology.
What is challenging within your role?No two days are the same and I have to think on my feet. It's easy to come up with quick fixes, the challenge is to think outside the box and find solutions that makes things better, quicker, faster, easier!
What advice would you give someone starting out?Don't be shy to ask for help and surround yourself with people that know more than you do. That's not a weakness; it helps you learn more quickly. Don't wait to be told to try something new, try it and see if it makes the process, job, role, better!
If you weren't working in legal, what do you think you'd be doing? Before moving into Legal I was briefly in the medical field and I would like to think I would have made a good A&E nurse or doctor! Perhaps I've watched too much car-crash TV.
Tell us about an "average" day, or if every day is different tell us about a recent dayAn average day is a day that is always different but I try to be disciplined with how I approach each day and prioritise. Review and prioritise emails, schedule time when I need to focus on documentation or research, never have meetings on a Friday. A large part of my time is spent talking and working with teams to find better ways of delivering service or ways to provide value to clients. My current obsession is Power BI and learning how to use it for myself to provide valuable insights to both internal and external clients which will lead to change and positive transformation.
