What do you like about your role?I love helping people. I find great satisfaction in training people and showing them how to use the IT systems to make life easier. My Firm didn't have an IT Trainer until I started one year ago and staff now realise the importance of training. They have become more time efficient and they see the benefits of knowledge. I am in this job a year and I also get a chance to work on the development and implementation of new software - DocX Tools, Bighand create. I enjoy this as it makes my role varied and I am also learning a lot.
What is challenging within your role?Getting Fee Earners to training is always a challenge. Sometimes popping up to their desk and offering one to one training works best. Testing new software can sometimes be a challenge. I will get one issue resolved and then notice that something else isn't working. It is interesting though.
What advice would you give someone starting out?To be a trainer you have to be passionate about training. Topics can be repetitive but no two classes are the same. You need patience too so make sure you have plenty of it. Be kind with people and listen to them. Let them know you are approachable. Sometimes a person may not like to ask lots of questions in a class but they might want to contact you directly about a topic after a session. Learning isn't just in a class room, it can be answering a question for someone in the corridor when you meet them. People learn in different ways so its good to offer a variety of ways to train. Make your training interesting and relevant. Have a good air con system in your training room as well!!!
If you weren't working in legal, what do you think you'd be doing?I think I would still be a trainer, maybe a school teacher. If I didn't have to work at all I would travel the world and swim in the sea all day.
Tell us about an "average" day, or if every day is different tell us about a recent dayIf I have a new starter my day is pretty much taken up with training them all day. If not, I run workshops on our applications. I could then answer some calls from users on something they are stuck with. I will visit a new starter and see if they have any questions now that they are at their desk. I have taken on project work as well and am currently coordinating our DocX tools project. So at the moment I am gathering a bank of documents from around the different departments we can use for converting to our new house styles. I am putting the project plan for rollout of this too.
